The cluster contributes to Norway taking a leading position within profitable and sustainable application of artificial intelligence in a business perspective.

The fast development within digital technologies has led many public and private enterprises to consider, or have started, to apply artificial intelligence (AI) in operational improvement, effectivization, and to product and service development.

Cluster for Applied AI consists of strong partners representing the entire value chain for applied AI. Our ambition is to develop a leading eco system bridging the gap between science and commercial use of the most potent technology of our time. We focus on collaborative efforts in research, technology development, ethics, security and commerzialization, thus helping our partners and society to grow into a more sustainable and profitable future.

Several reports and strategies, for instance Digital21, state that knowledge about and ability to exploit the competetive advantages that AI provides, is criticial in making organizations capable of creating competetive innovation in the future.

Cluster for Applied AI’s vision
The cluster’s members will become internationally leading, data-driven, efficient and customer-oriented through the development and use of sustainable, applied AI.

Mission – how we work towards our vision
The cluster develops a leading, open environment in Norway that triggers sustainable and profitable application of AI through collaboration, network effects, open innovation and competence development.


Artificial Intelligence (AI) is defined in the Government’s Strategy for Artificial Intelligence (AI) as:

“Artificially intelligent systems perform actions, physically or digitally, based on the interpretation and processing of structured or unstructured data, for the purpose of achieving a given goal. Some AI systems can also adapt by analysing and taking into account how previous actions have affected the environment.”

The collaboration between companies in Cluster for Applied AI (CAAI) triggers and reinforces Norwegian companies’ application of AI for sustainable restructuring and growth.

The cluster’s main goals
  1. Growth through competence enhancement. The members are provided with relevant expertise related to the innovation and application of AI within their markets through training, knowledge sharing and exchange of experience.
  2. Sustainable application and commercialisation of AI through good tools. Members receive help to understand the customer, get access to and structure data, apply AI to streamline and develop new solutions, business development, ethics, privacy, IPR and security.
  3. Building a national team for applied AI. Further develop a national ecosystem within applied AI where the best environments work together to develop Norwegian companies. We will not be successful in this area if we do not cooperate.
  4. International impact through collaborative development. Members have access to contacts, capital, expertise and are given visibility via national and international projects and networks.
The cluster’s contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

AI has great potential to make a positive contribution to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and research shows that technology can contribute to the realization of all the goals if done in the right way. One example of this is that AI through streamlining logistics and production can contribute to more efficient use of resources.

However, AI can also be used for purposes that are unethical, increase social differences, create echo chambers and unilateral or erroneous communication or that over-utilize natural resources. In order to ensure the right application of AI, the activity’s contribution to sustainability is therefore always assessed, which is anchored in the cluster’s mission and main objectives.
